We needed a few days at Mt Elizabeth Station to prepare for our mini adventure on the remote Munja track and we had to get permission from the station owners to use the track. An added bonus of staying there was that we got to visit the two private gorges on the property, Wunnamurra and Warla. The station also had a new foal, a few station dogs, peacocks, chooks and roosters, horses, cows and lots of old station machinery to keep the kids amused.
On our first night, around dusk, we were visited by, what Emilia called a 'wobbly'. She was so excited she got her words completely mixed up and couldn't get the word wallaby out. Anyway the wallaby gave the kids a good sniff and checked out their hands for food. He proceeded to visit us each evening and we were told he would eat oats straight out of our hands, which he did. It was such a lovely experience. By the third night, with some thought, Emilia managed to call it a wallaby on the first try.
Now to the gorges. Wunnamurra required a 1 hour journey on a 10km extremely rocky 4wd drive track then a 30min bush walk, including climbing down two ladders on the rocky edges of the waterfall, to get to, but it was well worth the effort. A pristine sandy banked swimming hole surrounded by red rocks and a beautiful waterfall with one section flowing from inside rocks through some exposed tree roots. In the surrounding rocks we found some great indigenous art and a short walk away we saw the best preserved art we had seen so far. Whilst exploring for art we were also suprised by a snake hiding in a crevice of the rocks, we were most impressed when he stuck his head out and we got to see him up close (well as close as we were game to go as we didn't know what type of snake it was- and we still don't but it isn't on my app of poisonous snakes).
The next day we went to Warla gorge, which is really just a wide bit of the Hahn river. It had a gorgeous sandy bank and we were the only ones there so the kids spent the afternoon playing in the sand and swimming whist Daniel and I made plans for the Munja track.
