Windjana Gorge Crocs

On Friday 19th June we began our Gibb River road adventure and were pleasantly surprised with the quality of the road. It had been recently graded and was great to drive on. First stop was the spectacular Windjana Gorge, it is over 3 kms long with 300 metre high walls. It used to be an underwater reef system over 300 million years ago so there is fossilised sea life in the rocky gorge walls, quite amazing to see. It is also one of the best places to see freshwater crocodiles and we spent a long time on the bank watching a large group sunning themselves. Even though they are meant to be harmless they still look menacing and they move so quickly when alarmed. We spent 3 nights at the dusty campground that thankfully had showers as the kids were filthy from the moment they stepped out of the van. Our friends, Martin, Kelly and Alexandra, joined us to explore nearby Tunnel Creek, where the creek has carved a tunnel/cave through a gorge. We did the 750 metre walk through the tunnel where we had to wade through the creek with our head torches as it was pitch black. The kids did an amazing job wading through waist deep water in the dark. I was feeling a bit apprehensive about what might be in the water but had to keep the fear at bay for them! Halfway through the roof had caved in and you can climb some rocky parts. We discovered some wild passionfruit which we feasted on. It was lovely and cool inside the cave and we spent about 4 hours down there. We enjoyed nights by the campfire cooking marshmallows and marveling at the stunning night time sky in the Kimberly. It was a great start to our Gibb River Rd adventure.
